This past summer, the Olympics was the topic of many conversations. At some point in that conversation, there was probably some mention of what all it takes for these young people to be the best of the best. What kind of exercise regiment must they be on? Or what kind of diet must they be on? All because these athletes are exceptional in their field. It takes work and sacrifice.
In 1 Timothy, we see Paul instructing Timothy on how to put the Ephesian church on a correction course. They had allowed themselves to be distracted by false doctrine, and it was causing them to be more like the world than like Jesus. Paul was calling Timothy to be focused on training for godliness. Training his physical body would only have an effect in this life.
As amazing as those Olympians are, their hard work will only matter here on this side of eternity. Godliness affects not only this life, but also eternity. Athletes are willing to do whatever it takes to be the best of the best. What are you willing to do to be like Jesus?
